Chapter Twelve

Return of the Champion

“Ten . . . nine . . . eight . . . seven . . . six . . . five . . . four . . . three . . . two . . . one!”

The crowd at the 2008 Royal Rumble counted out the seconds until the last Superstar, the man who had drawn number thirty, entered the ring. Nobody had a clue who it could be.

Then familiar theme music blasted through the speakers at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

“The time is up. My time is now!”

The stunned fans rose to their feet. After being out for months, John Cena was back!

The match commentators were just as surprised. They all started talking at once.

“What is this?”

“This is unbelievable! You’ve gotta be kidding me!”

John’s injury at the hands of Randy Orton had been so severe that nobody expected to see him in the ring until the spring, after WrestleMania. But John’s training and intensity allowed him to cut his recovery time by three months, stunning the announcers and the fans.

“The crowd is exploding at Madison Square Garden! John Cena is the thirtieth entrant in the Royal Rumble! And yes, indeed, business just picked up!”

The action in the ring stopped as the remaining Superstars sized up the situation.

“It’s go time!” John told them as he took off his shirt. Then he ran into the ring.

In less than a minute, he ejected three men over the top ropes: Carlito Cool, Chavo Guerrero, and Mark Henry. That left five Superstars standing between him and victory: Mr. Kennedy, Umaga, Kane, Batista, and Triple H, a seasoned pro with multiple championships in his career. Triple H was the twenty-ninth man in the ring and looked to be a favorite to win the Royal Rumble.

But nobody expected John Cena to be in the mix. He quickly took care of Mr. Kennedy, Umaga, and Kane. Triple H got rid of Batista. That left Triple H and John in the ring, staring each other down.

Triple H made the first move. He tried to hoist John over the ropes, but John kicked out of his grasp. Then John lifted Triple H over his shoulders and heaved him over the top rope with a mighty effort. It was fast and powerful, and Triple H couldn’t stop it.

“John Cena has won the Royal Rumble!”

The crowd went wild with excitement. One of the WWE’s most popular Superstars had returned, and he looked ready to take on anything.

“The impossible has happened,” John said after the match. “I’m back. I am the winner of the Royal Rumble. And I am going to WrestleMania!”

That’s what John wanted more than anything else—to go to WrestleMania and get back his WWE Championship. While he was out, Mr. McMahon had handed it over to Randy Orton. Orton went on to lose it to Triple H and then get it back the same night. If John wanted a title shot, he’d have to face his old tormentor again. And Randy Orton was more confident than ever.
